Tiny Home, Big Life — An Experiment in Simple Living | Erin & Dondi Harner

Tiny Home, Big Life — An Experiment in Simple Living | Erin & Dondi Harner

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Tiny home, big life. How two twenty-somethings radically rearranged their priorities, downsized their stuff, built tiny, and live big. A happy life is a rich compilation of experiences, not stuff. Living simply gives you more time, more money, and more freedom to do what you love. Life is a compilation of experiences, not just stuff. Making the conscious decision to do things differently is both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. Dare to be different.

Erin and Dondi Harner are twenty-something professionals with a passion for living healthy, sustainable lives. Dondi is a civil engineer who works in Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado. As an engineer he is actively involved in sustainable site design for commercial and educational buildings. Growing up in Ithaca, New York, Dondi worked side-by-side with his father on many different construction and carpentry projects. This led to Dondi’s passion for alternative energy and sustainable building practices.

Erin is a nutritionist, business owner, speaker, nutrition blogger, healthy recipe creator, and published author. She works with clients nationwide to help them create optimal health through real food nutrition.

In 2012, Dondi and Erin decided to take on an experiment in simple living by building a tiny home and living a bigger life. They were disenchanted with the notion that buying more stuff would make them happy. They wanted to know if, in fact, living with less would make them happier. So, they designed and built a 181 square-foot tiny home powered by the sun. They live in their tiny home ‘Soleil’ full time and are (still) happily married. Their next project is a tiny home retreat to give others the opportunity to experience living in a tiny home for a day, week, or year.

Erin has published a book:
“Real Food, Real Simple: A Personalized Plan for More Energy, Less Stress, and Healthy Meals in Minutes” by Erin Harner

Hydroponics Made Simple

Hydroponics Made Simple

Hydroponics, simple without the fuzz of fish growing, using chemicals etc…

4 pvc tubes, connectors, a water buffer, 1 waterpump and some compost tea.

Look how to make compost tea. I use some of the compost tea, i made for the garden in the hydroponics culture instead of all the chemicals and fish waste. This is a very easy do it your self way to grow veggies ! Lovin it. The plants love it and it looks good.

An improved all in one design (more lowcost also) to be build in the future, to also use indoors.

A Young Couple Find Freedom in Simple Living

A Young Couple Find Freedom in Simple Living

Peak Moment 160: Rather than follow the customary American dream, Tammy and Logan sold their home and car, and moved to a bikeable/walkable neighborhood in Sacramento, California. After reading Derrick Jensen’s writings, this couple used Your Money or Your Life as a means to get out of debt and, they feel, regain their lives and their future. While they recount the psychological challenges of facing a future of declining resources, the catalyst that continues to move them forward is a dream of living in an affordable tiny house within a supportive community.

Update: Watch our 2013 update: “Living Tiny, Finding Community” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZDiGT1V2AI Tammy and Logan fulfilled their dream of building a tiny house, and are now living in a small community in northern California.

In this video I talk about the steps I took to help simply not only my life but the lives of my husband and kids as well.

On this channel I am excited to share with you our family’s journey living on one income. We have been on Dave Ramsey’s baby steps for 3 years now and are cash flowing my husband’s graduate degree. The Masterpiece of a Simple Life

The Masterpiece of a Simple Life

When asked how he created his masterpiece, Michelangelo said, “It was easy. You just chip away that which does not look like David.” What if our lives are our masterpiece? What if we chipped away all that was unnecessary, all the clutter and the busyness, and focused on that which really mattered – our passions and our relationships. In this talk, Maura Malloy invites us on her path to simple living – stemming from backpacking through India to budgeting in grad school, from embracing an artist’s lifestyle in New York City to settling down with a husband (and a baby on the way) in Indianapolis – introducing us to tools on how to discover your own personal masterpiece.

Maura is a screenwriter who moonlights as an organizer and stylist, while sharing her path to simple living on her blog, A Serene Space. She has several film projects in various stages of development including: the web series Dream Boat recently wrapped production of a pilot episode, and the features AN ILLUMINATED LIFE and OUR REVELS are currently in development. AN ILLUMINATED LIFE, a biopic about J.P Morgan’s right-hand woman who passed as white during the turn of the century, and OUR REVELS, a modern day platonic love story, will both with star Tessa Thompson.
